A note from our supplier, This Side Up:

At This Side Up, we never wanted to support the Kenyan coffee industry. Around the world, Kenyan coffees are some of the most coveted and buyers are used to paying higher prices for them than any other African specialty, yet most of this price goes to a corrupt auction system and farmers are both unseen and earn extremely low farm gate prices.

Many young people therefore choose to abandon an undignified future in coffee farming and move to the city. The sad truth is that because of the amazing quality of Kenyan coffee we as an industry accept these high prices – keeping this system and this lack of social justice in place.

It warmed our hearts and brought huge smiles on our faces, when we found a way to trade directly with Kenyan farmers. Our good friend Stean Fasol grew up in Kenya and has made it his life goal to show the potential of African coffees and farmers to the world. He is known in the Netherlands with his brand Stean’s Beans for his great work with African farmers. We have cooperated for years already, which is why he proposed a way for us to offer coffees from his home country in a way that is true to both his and our ideals. In November 2020, Stean’s Beans was able to obtain an export licence in Kenya which allows him to bypass the auctions and market middle men. As a result, from the early months of 2021 onwards, we were able to purchase the coffee directly from coffee farmers in Kenya.

The coffee we chose for this pilot comes from Kenyan entrepreneur Gloria and her Finnish husband Jarmo. They run Sakami Coffee, one of the most environmentally sustainable farms in the country, with a wet mill powered fully by solar panels. They grow SL28, Ruiru 11, Batian and K7 varieties according to permaculture principles and help surrounding farmers obtain better prices and processing knowledge, following the lead of Gloria and Jarmo to a more sustainable coffee world, both financially and environmentally.

Our coffee comes in craft paper bags which contain a plastic liner on the inside to guarantee freshness of our coffee. Please dispose properly at your local plastic trash container. The Village Coffee is roasted fresh every week, and best consumed within four weeks after roast date. Store your coffee in a dry, dark and cool place, avoid the fridge.
