Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Tigest Wako

From: 13,25

This coffee was roasted with espresso preparation in mind, yet it is suitable for filter usage when a heftier coffee is something you like.

We, like many others, love coffees from Ethiopia. But Ethiopia has some challenges that make it different compared to other origins. One of the difficulties is exporting the coffees as smaller and traceable lots, and something that has only been made possible recently is for farmers to export their coffee as a single farmer lot. Nordic Approach helps the farmers with them finding buyers, and we were excited to taste the coffee from Tigest Wako, she’s an excellent producer that has created a coffee tasting both clean and complex. With lots of fruit, purple, peach, grape and tropical. But also very floral, with lavender and jasmine.

A note from our supplier, Nordic Approach:

Tigest Wako is a dedicated coffee producer based in Yirgacheffe region, Gedeo zone, in the kebele of Wogida, kebele of Jima’a. This is a region known for its fertile soil and ideal climate for growing coffee. Tigist grows coffee at 1962 masl, and her farm is 7.4 hectares in size. Tigest was inspired by the introduction of specialty coffee in Ethiopia in 2010, which prompted her to start on her own farm and contribute to the growing industry. In 2023, her hard work paid off as she achieved an impressive annual production of 119.00 quintals. She has also been in the top 150 candidates of Cup of Excellence two times. Her goal is to increase productivity, become known as one of the best producers in Yirgacheffe, and eventually make her farm even more productive. Tigest’s most rewarding aspect is “seeing the fruits of my labour pay off when I deliver high-quality beans to consumers.”

This coffee was harvested between October and December, and it is processed as a natural. Tigest has improved her coffee’s quality through practices like soil digging, composting, and carefully drying the beans using bamboo and nets.

This coffee is part of a single-farmer project we launched in Ethiopia during the 2024 harvest. In 2019, the Ethiopian government began issuing export licences to single farmers with over 2 hectares of land. Despite many farmers obtaining these licences, they struggle to find markets for their coffee and manage the complex logistics and documentation required for successful exportation. As a result, many farmers have given up on direct exporting and instead supply their coffee to established exporters. Through our initiative, we purchase coffee directly from these farmers, allowing them to act as the exporters. Our goal is to create a market for their coffee, offering higher premiums for their high-quality production. We aim to make their efforts financially viable and rewarding.

Our coffee comes in craft paper bags which contain a plastic liner on the inside to guarantee freshness of our coffee. Please dispose properly at your local plastic trash container. The Village Coffee is roasted fresh every week, and best consumed within four weeks after roast date. Store your coffee in a dry, dark and cool place, avoid the fridge.
